Iron oxides are iron compound consists of iron and oxygen. It plays a pivotal role in many biological and geographical processes and in today’s times, it is widely used by humans for various purposes such as electronics, industries, cosmetics and art. Iron oxides are available in different types that serve different purposes. Some of them are highlighted below.

Different Types Of Iron Oxide Powder

  • Red Iron Oxide Powder (Fe2O3) - It is an organic compound and is one of the main oxides of iron. It is easily attacked by the acids and generally known as rust. However, in medicinal terms rust is considered as an ill-defined term and is basically called as hydrated ferric oxide. This powder is used for polishing, magnetic recording, medicines, Photo catalyst and for pigment purposes.
  • Black Iron Oxide (FeO) – It is light in nature, resistance to alkali and many other beneficial properties are present in this black iron powder. It can only be dissolved in heat strong acid. This powder is used in the applications of paints, cement tiles, textile industries, cement colors etc.
  • Yellow Iron Oxide (FeO(OH) - Since ancient times, this powder has been used as a pigment and is also called as Geothite or ferric oxide hydrate. Yellow pigment is approved by FDA, which states that it can be used in cosmetics and in some tattoo inks. Because of its non-toxic properties, Yellow Iron Oxide can be used in fertilizers. Moreover, in present times, it is widely used in construction, ceramics, brake linings, animal feed, oil drilling etc.
  • Hematite Iron Oxide Powder- It is one of an important iron ore and considered to be rare crystals, which is blood red in color. It has several varieties with its own unique names that include, Hematite Rose, Tiger Iron, Kidney Ore, Oolitic Hematite and Specularite. It is used in some jewelry, either as a black jewelry or as a black reflective stones.

Aforementioned are some points regarding different types of iron oxides powder, which needs to be handled with care. However, all the above-mentioned iron oxides differ in size, properties, density and chemical composition that serve different purposes for different environment.
